On September 21,1909, a revolutionary was born. He was born to Mr Kofi Ngonloma and Mrs. Elizabeth Nyanibah in Nkroful a small village close to the frontier of Ivory Coast in Gold Coast, present day Ghana. This legend was named Kwame Nkrumah.
Raised a Roman Catholic, Nkrumah attended catholic day school and taught for a year as a pupil teacher in half-Assini.He entered Achimota college and got a teaching certificate in 1930. In 1935, he moved to America to pursue a masters degree and bachelor degree in theology at university of Pennsylvania and Lincoln university respectively
He married an Egyptian called Fathia Rizk, who became Fathia Nkrumah, popularly known as Fathia Fata Nkrumah. They gave birth to four children called Gamal Nkrumah Samia Nkrumah Francis Nkrumah and Sekou Nkrumah named after Kwame Nkrumah's friend in Guinea.
In furtherance, he became a great politician and a political theorist. Kwame became the first prime minister and president of Ghana having led Ghana to independence from the British in 1957 and declared Ghana as a republic in 1960.
Moreso, before independence in 1951, he was sent to jail with five other men and while they were in jail, an election was organized between him and the British and he won. Therefore, they called them the big six and also names him "Osagyefo" meaning the redeemer. After he declared Ghana as an independent country, the British flag was lowered and the Ghanaian flag was lifted.
During Nkrumah's term, he gave great speeches like,"I am not an African because I was born in Africa but Africa was born in me", he also said,"Africa is one continent, one people and one nation.
Nkrumah achieved a lot during his term like, building universities, sugar factories, glass factories, tomato factories, Ghana Oil company (GOIL) and high schools like Mfantsiman Secondary and Ghana National College, Cocoa Marketing Board (COCOBOD), and Ghana black star line with almost 15 ships.He also wrote inspirational books like Neocolonialism, Dark days in Ghana (1968) and Africa must unite.
He has been ranked among leaders such as Vladimir Lenin, Mahatma Gandhi,Mao Tse-Tung.
After all these,he was overthrown by Joseph Atta Ankrah, the chairman of National Liberation Council in 1966, for being autocratic and alleged of mismanaging Ghana's resources.
Finally, Nkrumah lived in Conakry, Guinea after his overthrow.Diagnosee with prostate cancer in August 1971, he flew to Romania for treatment.He then died on April 27 1972 at age 62 in Bucharest, Romania.His death was announced by President Sekou Toure of Guinea.
