In a significant development at Riverside Academy, the school library, which had remained dormant since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, was officially reopened on Thursday, October 2, 2023. The reopening ceremony was marked by the library’s transformation and renaming, now known as the ‘Nyansapo Library,’ with deep cultural significance derived from the Adinkra symbol ‘Nyansapo,’ which represents wisdom, ingenuity, intelligence, and patience. The event was attended by the school’s PTA executives, alongside a few parents.
The Nyansapo Library boasts a spacious layout, designed to accommodate various reading areas. Notably, it is equipped with a dedicated school librarian, 24-hour CCTV monitoring, and ample ventilation and lighting. Setting it apart from conventional school libraries, this state-of-the-art facility introduces an online OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) system, making it one of the first basic school libraries to embrace this cutting-edge technology. This initiative aligns with the school’s broader digitization agenda and aims to introduce the school’s community to first-class technological resources. Students, staff, and parents can now conveniently search for books from the library’s collection through the school’s website, allowing for a seamless and efficient browsing experience.
The reopening ceremony was attended by parents, school management, and staff, and marked a momentous occasion for the institution. Learners can now access the Nyansapo Library twice a week, following their respective class timetables. The library boasts an extensive collection of over 3000 unique volumes, offering a diverse range of fiction and non-fiction books to cater to the academic and recreational needs of students. Furthermore, the library is well-equipped with research volumes spanning a wide array of topics, positioning it as a hub for inquiry and research. It’s worth noting that, for the time being, the library operates as a reference-only facility.
In an exciting development, Phase 2 of the library’s revitalization is set to be launched in the second term, allowing students to subscribe to library services for a fee. Subscribed students will gain access to an online portal, granting them the ability to borrow books, reserve titles, write reviews, and efficiently manage their library resources. This forward-looking approach is aimed at ensuring the sustainability of the library and enhancing the educational experience at Riverside Academy.
Riverside Academy remains committed to resourcing its school community and promoting a conducive learning environment !
